Tom Carter visited Tweedside Tackle, Kelso this morning and asked shop owner Tim Pilcher for his top tips for anglers fishing the Tweed during the forth coming weeks.
Question: When the water is high and coloured what are the best flies and lines?
Answer: In coloured and high water the following flies fished square and adding a up-stream mend to get the fly down using a Wet Cell2 or the equivalent on a multi tip system can be very productive on Tweed
1: Thunder and Lightening Pot Bellied Snaelda on a Copper Tube 1 1/4″
2: Cascade Pot bellied on a Copper 1/4″
3: Monkey using an intermediate slime line (fast sinking intermediate). Fished square with a down stream mend to speed the fly up.
Swedish Anglers fishing the Dee and Tweed tell me the following:
“If you are only catching kelts, you are fishing too slow and too deep. Spring salmon are running fish and should be fished for in the appropriate fashion”.
