I met the team at Crabtree & Crabtree in Hamilton House which is perched high on the banks of the Tweed, with magnificent river views of Milne Graden and LadyKirk beats. Standing inside the cosy drawing room, looking out through the double doors at breath-taking views down the river, my cup of tea has never tasted so good.
Hamilton House is part of a small hamlet, over looking the river, of attractive period properties comprising Swan’s Nest, School House and Tweedside. Each property is beautifully furnished and can be hired collectively for larger groups wishing to holiday together but maintain a degree of privacy. The stunning interior of School House is reminiscent of a traditional sporting lodge, with its fabulous, convivial, open-plan living area. The dining room has been designed so it can be changed to seat larger groups of up to 20 guests if required. The high standard of furnishing in all the cottages, along with the thoughtful complimentary welcome pack (which includes the best home made lemon drizzle cake I have ever tasted) are just some of the wonderful delightful touches.
The last property we visited was the magnificent Garden House. This really is a place to get away from it all. No road or building in sight, other than the romantic ruins of Twizel Castle, and only the occasional deer, heron and otter for neighbours. Garden House and the properties nesting in the Hamilton House hamlet are just a short walk to the Estate’s popular salmon fishing beats.
Milne Graden Estate has 1.4 miles of left bank salmon and sea trout fishing. Its proximity to the tidal waters result in a reasonable run of spring fish in addition to the late summer and autumn runs. The beat has good runs of grilse and sea trout throughout the summer months and fishes particularly well in low and mid water conditions, where other beats further upstream might struggle.
I left Milne Graden impressed by the exceptional high standard of accommodation available for anglers and their families coming to the Tweed on holiday. It has everything a visiting angler needs and is only a few miles away from shops, pubs and restaurants in Norham and Coldstream.
