Caledonia Fly Company are excited at the prospects for April fishing on the Tweed as the tail end of March saw some fine catches coming off the river. Iain Wilson from Borders Gunroom is starting to edge towards his tenth springer so far this season.
Patterns working very well are the Posh Tosh on a 1” copper tube. When the water drops a little the doubles are also fishing in sizes 6 & 8.
The Aurora Cascade is a hot fly to have at the moment. A fly you should always have in your box when visiting Tweed as it is consistently performs well and is reliable catcher.
Talking of reliable catching patterns you should not forget about the Flame Thrower Tosh and Gold Willie Gunn as when fish are about these again should be fished with confidence during the month.
Spring fly fishing would not be complete without mentioning the Border Optimist & Eternal Optimist. Many anglers enjoy fishing a bit of green in the spring and these two copper tube patterns are two good reasons why.
Flies that I love to give a swim are the Pro Ultra Sonic discs (conehead with holes in it) and the Gold Willie Gunn and Posh Tosh which have great colour combinations and movement, seductive to fish and producing fish from the river.
